Luzon-based wrestling clubs bagged seven out of 12 gold medals in the 2014 Philippine-Guam International Takedown Wrestling Challenge held on Aug. 9 in Pasig City.
The Wresting Association of the Philippines (WAP) organized the friendly matches between the Guam wrestling team and wrestling clubs of Quezon City, Parañaque, Apayao, Safehouse-Submission Sports Philippines, YawYan-Kampilan, Taytay, FIST, and Iranian Wrestlers in the PHL.
Michael Vergel (65 kg senior men), Miguel Palana (70 kg senior men), Joseph Mercado (74 kg senior men) and Anthony Arcilla (50 kg junior men) won gold medals for Safehouse-SSP. The club bagged the most number of gold medals among the clubs with four, second only to the Guam team which brought home five.
YawYan-Kampilan's Nico Allego won in the 57 kg senior men, while Juner Abreu (40 kg junior men) and Michael Elardo (55 kg junior men) copped gold for Taytay and Quezon City.
Guam hauled the gold medals for the women's category courtesy of Jenifer Blas (53 kg senior women), Brenisha Reyes (60 kg senior women), and Chantay Fejeran (75 kg senior women).
Aguon Chandler (55 kg senior men) and Isaiah Ignacio (86 kg senior men) also won gold for the Guam team.
"The Guam wrestling team which decided to train and compete with our group -- just like our international federation and the rest of our counterparts in the Southeast Asian and Oceania regions -- continually supports us, " said WAP secretary general Karlo Sevilla.
Before the tournament, the Guam team led by coach and team manager Luis Ting trained with the local club athletes under Iranian coach Ashkan Ghaedramat. — JST, GMA News
