Amparo Teresa Acuña, a 17-year-old Filipina, bagged a silver medal for the country at the 38th Southeast Asia Shooting Association (SEASA) championships in Singapore on Saturday.
The teenaged Acuña bagged a total of 614.8 points throughout the entire competition, just 3.2 points shy of the score of first-placer Thu Thu Kyaw of Myanmar.
In a phone interview with GMA News Online, Amparo's mother, Tessa, said her daughter beat other Southeast Asian participants in the elimination round for the 50-meter rifle prone tilt before placing second, next to Myanmar, at the finals.
She added that Amparo was the only Filipino delegate to reach the finals after competing against 30 other shooters from seven different countries.
"Other competitors from Malaysia and other countries were Olympic veterans," Tessa noted.
She added that Amparo is set to compete in the 50-meter rifle three positions tilt on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Tessa said her daughter, a third year high school student at St. Paul College in Pasig, has been shooting for two years and a half now, and won the bronze medal in last year's SEASA championship in the 50-meter rifle three positions tilt.
"Athletic talaga siya, and she was very good at it kaya nag-compete na agad," she added. — VC, GMA News
