The Philippines bagged twin gold medals in softball in the Southeast Asian Games, after the men's and women's teams turned back their respective foes in the finals on Wednesday at the Kallang Softball Field, Singapore.
The Blu Boys emerged triumphant against Indonesia, 6-4, thanks to a huge fourth inning where they scored four runs.
Both teams scored their first runs in the third inning, but the Philippines seized the momentum with their explosion at the bottom of the fourth after retiring the Indonesian side scoreless.
Indonesia managed to take back two runs at the top of the fifth and shut out the Filipinos during their defense, but they were held to just one run in the sixth.
The Philippines also scored an insurance run at the bottom of the inning, and then closed the door on the Indonesians at the top of the seventh to seal the victory.
The Blu Girls, meanwhile, breezed through Vietnam in the women's grand finals with a 3-0 shut out. The team scored in the second and third innings, and then protected their lead en route to their win.
The two teams enjoyed an undefeated campaign in the tournament, dominating other Southeast Asian countries to qualify for the gold medal round. — Marisse Panaligan/JST, GMA News
