In her first international race, Marella Salamat led the charge for Philippine cycling on Thursday at the Southeast Asian Games with a dominating victory in the women’s individual time trial event.
The 21-year-old dentistry student from University of the East clocked in 44 minutes and 46.38 seconds to rule the 30-kilometer race.
“Nagbunga ang lahat ng pinaghirapan ko,” said Salamat, who grew up as a competitive bowler before being scouted by national coach Cesar Lobramonte while cycling as part of her cross training.
“Kasama na rin ang pagtitiwala sa sarili at sa extensive training namin sa Pilipinas.”
National team head coach Chris Allison raved about Salamat's potential in the sport.
“She’s a very strong rider and if given the proper attention, she could go a long, long way,” he said.
Salamat's male counterparts weren't as successful, however, with Ronald Oranza missing the podium by 21 seconds to finish fourth. Mark John Galedo, the defending time trial champion, meanwhile, had a miserable second lap to finish in sixth place.
“Nawala ang rhythm ko pagdating sa second lap,” he said. “Naghabol pa rin ako sa last lap at nakuha ko pero malayo na.” —JST, GMA News
