Malacañang on Monday said the Philippines is proud of Jason Day, the Filipino Australian golfer who  won the 2015 PGA Championship.

"Tunay na maipagmamalaki ng Pilipinas ang kampeon na si Jason Day," Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said in a statement.

"Binabati namin ang Filipino Aussie golfer na si Jason Day sa kanyang tagumpay sa 2015 PGA Championship," he added.

Coloma said Day's mother is a Filipina from Leyte province. He said the golfer's grandmother and seven other relatives were among those who perished during the onslaught of Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan).

Day became the fifth Australian to win the PGA Championship after Steve Elkington (1995), Wayne Grady (1990), David Graham (1979) and Jim Ferrier (1947).

"It's an amazing feeling," a visibly emotional Day told CBS Sports after being presented with the coveted Wanamaker Trophy, which he hoisted high in celebration.
