Team Philippines in Rio ahead of Olympics opening


 

 

Thirteen Filipino athletes hope to end the Philippines' 20-year medal drought as they compete in the Summer Olympics starting on Saturday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Marestella Torres-Sunang, Eric Cray, and Mary Joy Tabal will represent the country in track and field, while Rogen Ladon and Charly Suarez will try to medal in boxing.

Swimmers Jasmine Alkhaldi and Jessie Lacuna, as well as weightlifters Hidilyn Diaz and Nestor Colonia, will also wear the country's colors in the quadrennial meet.

Ian Lariba (table tennis), Miguel Tabuena (golf), Kirstie Alora (taekwondo), and Kodo Nakano (judo) complete the Philippine delegation in Rio. —JST, GMA News
