SINGAPORE - ONE welterweight champion and former Olympic wrestler Ben Askren is retiring undefeated after making quick work of former ONE lightweight champion Shinya Aoki in the main event of ‘ONE: Immortal Pursuit’ Friday night at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore.
Askren, 33, needed just under a minute to end his mixed martial arts career on a high note.
Pulled down to Aoki’s trademark close guard, Askren didn’t allow the Japanese MMA legend to get close to pulling any submission.
A barrage of punches from a mounted Askren left Aoki helpless on the mat, prompting the referee to stop the contest at the 0:57 mark of round one.
It was Askren’s retirement fight as he ended his career with an 18-0 record while Aoki dropped to 39-8-1.
On the undercard, Singapore's own Amir Khan relied on his accurate striking to emerge victorious over the durable mixed martial arts veteran in Adrian Pang. Khan utilized a wide array of punches and kicks throughout three rounds en route to a unanimous decision.
Khan improved his record to 9-2 while Pang suffered his third consecutive defeat and fell to 22-11-2. — BAP, GMA News
