MANILA - Reigning ONE bantamweight world champion Bibiano Fernandes denied two-division title holder Martin Nguyen from making history following a split decision victory over the latter in the main event of "ONE: Iron Will" Saturday night at Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand.

Fernandes, 37, was the busier fighter throughout the night as he utilized his boxing and takedowns to tame a highly dangerous puncher in Nguyen.

Nguyen had his moments too, but Fernandes sealed the deal in the final round when he dropped the challenger with a right straight.

Fernandes emerged victorious after five five-minute rounds, keeping his ONE bantamweight title and improving his record to 22-3. Nguyen, meanwhile, suffered the second defeat of his pro career as he fell to 10-2.

In the co-main event, Filipino strawweight Jeremy Miado defied the odds when he stopped former ONE strawweight champion Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke in the very first round.

After a back and forth exchange of strikes, Miado caught the Thai with a thunderous right cross that dropped him stiff to the canvas. The stoppage came at the 1:29 mark of round one.

The Philippines’ own Angelie Sabanal also scored an upset after she defeated local favorite Rika Ishige on the undercard.

Both female fighters kept the fight standing in the middle of the cage, but it was the Filipina who landed the more telling blows throughout the contest.

All three judges scored the fight for Sabanal after three five-minute rounds.
