Manila Wrestling Federation's 'Kasaysayan': Full card preview
Coming off the heels of a preview show at U.P. Diliman, Manila Wrestling Federation invites ardent fans and new viewers anew to witness the continued unfolding of their history — and to abide by its family-friendly rules.
Robin Sane & Ho Ho Lun v.s. Mr. Lucha & The Eurasian Dragon
The main event of the show features the high-flying ace Robin Sane against the self-styled, venerable Mr. Lucha with their international partners.
Sane partners with WWE alumni and the Godfather of Hong Kong wrestling, Ho Ho Lun months after the two had the best match MWF has seen in its short life at the now-defunct Makati Cinema Square.
Mr. Lucha meanwhile will help welcome back into the Philippine scene the Eurasian Dragon, one-half of the current Singapore Pro Wrestling (SPW) Southeast Asian Tag Team Champions the Mighty Dragons.
One of the most unique aspects of MWF that sets it apart is its willingness to invite outside talent to witness its growth from infancy to its troubling two's.
In a way, this forces everyone on the roster to step up and put their best foot forward to keep up with wrestlers who have more consistent experience than them and keep KapaFEDs — as MWF fans are called — coming to their shows.
But on the other hand, this also shows that consistency is key to hone skills, and though reviews were favorable for their "Level UP" house show, MWF starting its second year is visibly obvious in their shows.
Time will only tell whether this system will eventually lead to the overall promotion getting a boost in terms of performance and training, but it certainly makes it a unique drawing bonus for the fledgling MWF.
"Danger" Rex Lawin v.s. Frankie Thurteen
Certainly out of left field, but not unwelcome, this fight between the dangerous Rex Lawin and the grungy Thurteen will be an interesting clash of styles between two men who can certainly fight for the moniker of "danger."
However, there was an expectation back at Noche Buena in December that Lawin would face off against Australasian Wrestling Federation (AWF) founder "TNT" Greg Bownds.
Whether they have that saved up for another show or plans fell through, it's good to know that MWF's ready with a back-up match that's potentially as explosive as TNT.
Aldrin Richards & Hanzello Shilva vs. Kyle Sison & Ashura
Enemies-turned-partners seems to be the theme of this show, and it continues in this tag team between two sets of warriors previously pit against each other.
Richards and Shilva, as prone as they are to unnecessarily prolonging their bouts, are two of the most promising talents in the whole promotion.
As grand as it would be to see them square off again, teaming up will help their talents mature and find a new way to make their dynamics more interesting.
Sison and Ashura on the other hand have a lot of growing up to do. Though their grappling match in December was unique and gutsy, it also showed just how much they have a lot to learn before they get to the level of finesse they seem to aspire to.
Perhaps Mr. Lucha's right in pairing up his proteges — while he's busy making up for his lack of legacy, getting the young talents to team up may be the only way right now for them to get that valuable in-ring experience.
Brother Jomar v.s. Fabio Makisig
Will Moises Liwanag's ascension to the light ever be explained?
Whatever the answer is, Brother Liwanag continues to strike out on his own months after the self-proclaimed Wrestling Lord and Savior, John Sebastian, knocked his lights out at Noche Buena.
For his next fight, Jomar has the task of taking out Fabio Makisig, whose ego continues to grow as big as his hair especially after his deceptive win over Stryker.
If Jomar wins, not only will he get the first win of his career, but he will also end the streak of the lossless Makisig.
Morgan Vaughn v.s. Ninja Ryujin
The "Son of a Glitch" Vaughn has had better performances than the slowest ninja in the world, but maybe time off has helped Ninja Ryujin improve his agility and dexterity.
If this is the case, one of the most properly antagonistic heels in MWF in the form of Vaughn can test his villainous flair against someone so adamant in his heroism.
Gigz Stryker and RG's Special Premiere
It's unclear if this means that the 90's action star will show off a new film with the UP-bred RG or if the two will have another match, but either way, this meeting of the worlds will be something to pique the audience's interest.
Guest stars
KapaFEDs will get a chance to see guest stars on top of Manileno-style wrestling this Sunday before WWE's "WrestleMania."
Elora Españo, part of 2016 MMFF " Seklusyon" the award-winning and Netflix-hosted "Birdshot," will be in attendance along with actress Maria Ozawa.
MWF Kasaysayan will take place at The Elements at Centris on April 8. Gates open at 6 p.m. for a Q&A session and the show will start at 7 p.m.
Tickets are available at the gate and through reservation.
