Kevin Belingon says speed is key in beating Martin Nguyen
Hard-hitting bantamweight contender Kevin Belingon of Team Lakay believes he has the speed advantage over two-division champion Martin Nguyen when they square off for the ONE interim bantamweight title in the main event of 'ONE: Reign of Kings' on July 27 at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Belingon, 30, has been on an absolute tear after he trampled his past five opponents on his way to a title shot against Nguyen.
The Filipino striker has nothing but praises for Nguyen, citing he's eager to test his skills against the Australian-Vietnamese responsible for beating two of his teammates.
"Becoming the champion has been my goal since my career started. It is a lifelong dream for me. I need to win my next bout to turn my dream into a reality. This is going to be a very exciting match. To take on an elite athlete like Martin, it will only be good for my experience. I look forward to testing my skills against him," said Belingon.
"Martin has very good, high level skills. His wrestling is very strong, and so is his boxing. He is aggressive, and he punches with power. There is no underestimating this guy, but I think his biggest weakness is his speed, especially in this fight. He is not faster than me. I think this will come down to who gets there first."
Throughout his mixed martial arts career, Belingon made a name for himself by being a highly explosive striker capable of hurting his foes with either his legs or fists.
He says he'll go for the knockout should the opportunity present itself, but adds he's also ready to go the distance.
"I am training very hard to make sure I am well-equipped with everything I need to face any situation," said Belingon. "If I have the opportunity to finish him, I will not hesitate to grab that chance, but I am prepared for this fight to go full five rounds as well." — BAP, GMA News
