Fernandes prepping for an improved Belingon in upcoming ‘ONE’ rematch
MANILA - Reigning ONE bantamweight champion Bibiano Fernandes was expecting a much more dangerous version of ONE interim bantamweight title holder Kevin Belingon when they meet for the second time in the co-main event of "ONE: Heart of the Lion" on November 9 at Indoor Stadium in Singapore.
Fernandes, 38, first encountered Belingon in 2016 when he defeated the Filipino in the opening round by submission.
The Filipino striker has since worked his way back to the top after that night, and Fernandes acknowledged that Belingon was now a much better fighter compared to their first meeting.
"Kevin Belingon has tremendously grown and improved as a martial artist since our first encounter in 2016. He is now a more well-rounded competitor, as shown in his past six bouts against top-tier opponents," said Fernandes.
"I was particularly impressed in his most recent performance against Martin Nguyen. Belingon showcased in that bout his huge improvement in takedown defense. Not only that he showed up with his trademark speed, power, and explosiveness, he also proved that he has the patience and discipline to execute a game plan for a big fight."
Fernandes, touted as the most dominant world champion in ONE Championship history, was unbeaten in Asia's largest MMA promotion and had not tasted defeat since 2010.
Fernandes has worn the gold-plated strap around his waist for years, and says he plans to keep it that way when he lock horns with Belingon in November.
And while he acknowledged Belingon's improvement the past couple of years, the Brazilian world champion quipped that he was ready for whatever the Filipino brought to the table.
"I am not taking Belingon for granted, and I am training harder than ever to make sure that I triumph over his best version yet in Singapore," Fernandes declared.
"I have worn the gold-plated strap around my waist for years, and I plan to keep it that way when we meet again for our rematch. I am ready to go the full five rounds, but I am also ready to finish the bout by knockout or submission when the opportunity presents itself." — DVM, GMA News
