Samboy Lim's daughter Jamie cops gold, leads Karate Pilipinas' 8-medal loot

The daughter of Samboy Lim and former Pag-IBIG Fund CEO Darlene Berberabe, Jamie, notched gold as seven other members of the Karate Pilipinas took home medals in the 2019 Amatör Spor Haftasi Karate Championship in Sakarya, Turkey last October 13.

Lim dominated her opponent from the host city, 8-0, to clinch gold in the senior female -68kgs kumite.

Rexor Tacay, Ivan Agustin and Miyuki Tacay each grabbed silver in the senior male -67kgs kumite, senior male -75 kgs kumite and senior female -61kgs kumite, respectively.

Adding to the Philippines' medal tally are bronze medalists Mae Soriano (senior female -55kgs kumite), Engene Dagohoy (senior male -84 kgs kumite), Prince Alejo (senior male -67kgs kumite) and Sharief Afif (senior male -75kgs kumite).

The squad, led by their foreign coach, former European and world champion and former Turkish national team coach Okay Arpa is finishing their 2-month training camp in Turkey in preparation for this year’s Southeast Asian Games.

Aside from excelling in her chosen sport, Jamie was also among the 55 students who graduated summa cum laude from the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman. She was the valedictorian of the UP College of Science.

The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics graduate garnered a weighted average grade of 1.073.

Summa cum laude, a Latin phrase meaning “with the greatest honors,” is the university’s highest academic distinction for graduates who earn a weighted average grade (WAG) of 1.20 or better. — Ma. Angelica Garcia/LA, GMA News
