Amid race for gold, Pinoy surfer rescues Indonesian competitor

For Roger Casugay, winning the gold medal takes a backseat to saving a fellow surfer.

In a post shared by the 2019 Southeast Asian Games Facebook page, Jefferson Ganuelas narrated how the events unfolded during the surfing gold medal match Friday at the Monalisa Pt., San Juan, La Union.

"In the midst of the men’s longboard open competition for surfing, Indonesia’s Arip Nurhidayat broke his leash and was swept away by the waves," the post said.

"This is how #WeWinAsOne," the post said.

As of writing, the second match of the men's longboard open is postponed.

Prior to the postponement, Pinoy surfer Rogelio Esquievel Jr. scored 17.35 against the 10.50 score of Indonesia's Dean Permana in the first match of the longboard tournament. —Justin Kenneth Carandang/JST, GMA News
