Hidilyn Diaz keeps her focus on Tokyo Olympics amid lockdown: 'Alam kong kaya kong manalo'

Hidilyn Diaz is not giving up on qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics despite the one-year delay due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

In Chino Trinidad's report for "24 Oras," the 2016 Rio Olympics silver medalist said she will use the extra time to continue her training and preparation for the Games.

Asked how she keeps herself determined to win the elusive Olympic gold medal for the Philippines, Hidilyn said she has her confidence and pride as an athlete.

"Siguro kasi alam kong kaya kong manalo at nandun na eh, ayokong magretire sa weightlifting as an athlete na quitter ako," she said.

The Filipina weightlifter and her team have been caught by the lockdown in Malaysia. They were supposed to fly to Colombia for her final Olympic qualifying tournament.

Hidilyn still doesn't know when she can return to the Philippines given the current situation, but she is staying positive that everything will eventually come to pass.

"May katapusan din ang lahat ng 'to," she said. "Naipakita natin na malakas tayo at babangon tayo kahit anong pandemic ito." —MGP, GMA News
