Alistair Overeem turns to ground and pound to stop Augusto Sakai at UFC Fight Night

Alistair Overeem proved he has a lot left in the tank at 40 years old, following a stoppage win over Augusto Sakai on Sunday (PHL time) in the main event of UFC Fight Night: Overeem vs. Sakai at UFC APEX in Las Vegas.

Sakai, 29, had an early lead as he closed the distance and dealt damage with his wide array of strikes that managed to hurt Overeem.

The former Dream, Strikeforce and K-1 world grand prix champion Overeem showcased that he is still in the fight when he took down Sakai in round three and opened a cut with his hammerfist.

Sakai landed a huge elbow in round 4 only to get taken down again. Overeem went for the takedown early in the final round and pounded away en route to a technical knockout at the 0:26 mark of round five.

The win improved Overeem’s record to 47-18 and snapped Sakai’s six-fight winning streak as the latter fell to 15-2.

In the co-main event, Ovince St. Preux utilized his height and reach advantages to overcome Alonzo Menifield.

St. Preux was clinical with his striking throughout the contest. His patience paid dividends in round two after he flattened Menifield with a counter left hook to win the the contest via knockout. — LA, GMA News
