Georges St. Pierre contemplates comeback against 'best in the UFC' Khabib Nurmagomedov

Retired two-division UFC world champion Georges St. Pierre has his eyes on UFC lightweight world champion Khabib Nurmagomedov if he ever decides to make a comeback.

St. Pierre, 39, last saw action inside the octagon against Michael Bisping in the main event of UFC 217 in November 2017, where he won via third-round submission.

Should he feel the urge to fight again, he welcomes the idea of facing Nurmagomedov, who he believes is the top athlete in the UFC today.

"I believe Khabib right now is the best fighter in the UFC, he's the best guy right now. He's undefeated, he has this aura of invincibility. The scariest thing for a fighter but also the most exciting is to fight someone who seems unbeatable," St. Pierre told ESPN.

"If I ever consider a comeback that would be the fight that I would be interested in because of that reason," he added.

Nurmagomedov, who holds an MMA record of 28-0, is slated to defend his gold-plated strap against the UFC interim lightweight champion Just Gaethje at UFC 254 on October 24 at Fight Island in Abu Dhabi.

The Russian's camp revealed that Nurmagomedov plans to retire with a record of 30-0 with St. Pierre being his last fight. But a fight between Nurmagomedov and St. Pierre remains a pipe dream, as the latter remains half-hearted about making a return inside the cage.

St. Pierre said he has "mixed feelings" due to the different situation now amid the coronavirus pandemic.

"When I train I feel like I still have it, so if you would've asked me, 'Would you like to fight Khabib?' in the middle of my training session or right after my adrenalin is up, I'm like, 'Let's do it, I'm excited,'" he said.

"But then after I take a hot shower, I go eat, hang out, come back home then I'm thinking about all these dramas and stuff I'm like, 'Hell no I'm good where I am,'" he added.

One thing is certain if ever St. Pierre does make a return: he would not compete in the lightweight division.

"Three years ago after my fight with Michael Bisping, I was all in. We tried to make it happen, now things have changed. The stars need to be aligned," he said.

"Three years ago I was even willing to go down to 155 (pounds). I was back, I was active. I don't know I think it would be a mistake if I go back to 155 because I can make 155 maybe but my performance could be jeopardized because I've never been there," he said. —MGP, GMA News
