Michael Martinez starts fundraiser for 2022 Winter Olympics bid

Michael Martinez said he is "officially back on ice" as he aims for a spot in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

In a Facebook post on April 8, Martinez shared he is training in the US for the Nebelhorn Trophy, an Olympic qualifying tournament, which will be held in September in Germany.

"To prepare for the Winter Olympics Qualifying Event: NEBELHORN TROPHY in September 22 to 25, 2021 in Germany, I am currently doing an intensive training in New Jersey, USA with my coach Nikolai Morozov who is one of the top international figure skating coaches," Martinez wrote.

For his attempt to join the qualifiers, Martinez is asking for support through a fundraiser.

"No tropical nation has ever won a Winter Olympic medal, and for all intents and purposes, Michael is vying to be the first. Nonetheless, his participation in this event is more than just becoming a champion, as it is also about generating more awareness about the sport and his motherland," Geoffried Viz, organizer of the page, wrote in the GoFundMe page on behalf of Martinez.

Martinez also shared snippets of his training on his social media pages.

Martinez failed to advance in the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics after finishing 28th out of 30 competitors in the short program event.

Martinez, the first Olympic skater from Southeast Asia, also participated in the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
