Kamaru Usman vows that he is still improving, says sky is the limit

UFC welterweight world champion Kamaru Usman has warned that he is still improving after his second-round knockout of fan favorite Jose Masvidal in the main event of UFC 261 this Sunday.

Previously criticized for his wrestling-based style and lack of action style due to his striking, the 33-year-old from Nigeria teamed up with renowned coach Trevor Wittman to improve his stand-up game.

“Sky is the limit, I’m growing so much in the sport, and I’m just blessed to be at this present time and moment. It was a sweet one, it’s up there. If you look at the knockouts now that I’m putting together, that one’s up there for sure,” said Usman.

“That’s what I wanted to do, I said I’m so far ahead of these guys, I’m coming around and lapping these guys on the track, I’m coming around with a vengeance and I had to go out there and put the nails in that coffin and I did and we turn the page and move forward.”

Usman and Masvidal previously met at UFC 251 in July 2020 where the champion won by unanimous decision.

Usman’s failure to stop Masvidal, who took the fight on late notice, became the latter’s badge of honor. Usman repeatedly said before that his foe only took the fight because he has a ready excuse, but is now content with his performance after a devastating finish.

“Now I’m satisfied. They said they wanted violence out here in Jacksonville, Florida and I went out there and gave it to them,” Usman stated.

“It was just me staying composed. I know he was trying to bring me out of myself. Like I said, I’m not a character out there, I’m not an imposter, that’s who I am and I just had to go out there and stay composed, stay with my fundamentals and the finish comes.” — BM, GMA News
