Canelo Alvarez makes Billy Joe Saunders quit, adds WBO 168lb- world title to his collection
Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has added the WBO world super middleweight title to his collection following an eighth-round technical knockout over Billy Joe Saunders this Sunday at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, USA.
Saunders opened the contest with jabs while Alvarez was calculated in his attack, throwing jabs himself and going to the body. Saunders seemingly started to feel Alvarez's punches in round two as the Mexican stepped up his offense by mixing up his punches.
A right uppercut then a clubbing right hand on top from Alvarez found its target in round three. Saunders shook it off, saying the punches did not hurt him which invited the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world to unload some more the following round.
Saunders found his rhythm in round 5, landing his combinations and a hard clubbing left on top. He did the same in round 6 though Alvarez never looked hurt as he continued to press throwing hard shots to the body and right uppercuts on top.
A barrage of hard punches from Alvarez got Saunders hurt and had his right eye swelling in round 8. Saunders seemed ready to go but was saved by the bell. He refused to come out for round 9, earning Alvarez a technical knockout win in round 8.
Alvarez now holds The RING, WBC, WBA, and WBO world super middleweight titles after the victory improving his record to 56-1-2 with 38 knockouts. Saunders, meanwhile, tasted his first defeat as he fell to 30-1 with 14 knockouts.
The last remaining world title of the division is currently held by IBF world super middleweight champion Caleb Plant. — LA, GMA News
