Alex Eala advances to French Open Juniors doubles round 2 after early singles exit
Alex Eala's 2021 French Open Juniors campaign isn't done yet.
After falling short in girls' singles action on Monday, the Filipina tennis sensation advanced in the girls' doubles second round after she and her Russian partner Oksana Selekhmeteva swept their first round match.
The duo bested the deadly pair of Evialina Laskevich of Belarus and Alina Shcherbinina of Russia, 6-4, 6-4, at the Stade Roland-Garros in Paris, France.
Eala and Selekhmeteva buckled down after a slow start, 1-3, to take a 5-4 lead en route to winning the opening set at 6-4.
They continued to roll in the following set after establishing an early 3-0 advantage before the opposing side came through and cut the deficit at 5-3.
But the 16-year-old Eala, who won the Australian Open Juniors doubles title last year, got her rhythm back to help her teammate win the game, 6-4.
The victory serves as a redemption for the Filipina player who earlier in the day exited in the girls' singles with a 4-6, 7-6, 1-6 loss at the hands of Matilda Mutavdzic of Great Britain.
Eala and Selekhmeteva reached the doubles finals of the W25 Platja D'Aro tournament in Spain in May.
They are set to face the tandem of Sofia Costoulas of Belgium and Laura Hietaranta of Finland in the second round on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
