Filipino golfer Juvic Pagunsan qualifies for Tokyo Olympics

Make that 13 for the Philippines.

The country now has 13 qualified athletes for this year's Tokyo Olympics after Filipino golfer Juvic Pagunsan formalized his berth by finishing within the Top 60 of world ranking.

The 43-year-old golfer joins a Philippine contingent that already features EJ Obiena (pole vault), Carlos Yulo (gymnastics), Hidilyn Diaz and Elreen Ando (weightlifting), Eumir Marcial, Irish Magno, Carlo Paalam and Nesthy Petecio (boxing), Criz Nievarez (rowing), Kurt Barbosa (taekwondo), Margielyn Didal (skateboarding), and Jayson Valdez (shooting).

Pagunsan will compete in the quadrennial meet where the golf events are slated from July 29 to August 1 at the Kasumigaseki Country Club.

His qualification came in as the country is still celebrating the historic feat by Yuka Saso as the young Filipina-Japanese golfer won the 76th US Women's Open two weeks ago.

Saso and fellow golfer Bianca Pagdanganan are also expected to plunge into the Olympics stage as they are currently in the Top 60 of the women's world ranking.
