2021 Southeast Asian Games won't push through this year

The 2021 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games will not push through this year.

Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino bared the development on Thursday and said the resolution was unanimously decided by the members of the SEAG federation following a meeting today.

Due to the pandemic, the biennial meet, which is supposed to take place from November 21 to December 2 this year, will instead be rescheduled to a later date.

"It's (Vietnam SEAG) just postponed to a later date but it's not cancelled. They want it to push through," Tolentino said in a press conference.

"They will decide in the next 10 days when it will push through."

Tolentino said it should be pushing through within the first half of 2022 so as not to run smack with Cambodia's preparation of its hosting of the 2023 SEA Games.

Ramon Fernandez, the country's chef de mission to Vietnam SEAG and a PSC commissioner, said they will observe whether to have the athletes continue with their training.

"We just have to find out what dates Vietnam will stage the SEA Games  but we have to play it by ear at this point," Fernandez said.
