Conor McGregor breaks ankle, Dustin Poirier wins by TKO at UFC 264
The rivalry between former UFC interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier and ex-UFC two-division champion Conor McGregor came to the most unexpected conclusion following a first-round TKO win by the former in the main event of UFC 264 this Sunday.
McGregor went to work as soon as the first bell rung throwing three consecutive kicks that seemingly threw off his opponent for a short period. Poirier landed strikes of his own until the fight went to the ground where McGregor went all-in with a guillotine choke.
Poirier was able to escape the submission attempt then rained down elbows that managed to hurt McGregor. They eventually stood up only to see McGregor fall on the mat apparently with his ankle broken which prompted the referee to stop the fight at the end of the first round.
It was not the ideal ending to a storied rivalry but it certainly puts Poirier above McGregor having won 2 of their 3 fights. He improved his professional mixed martial arts record to 28-6 while McGregor dropped to 22-6.
