Carlos Yulo '100% okay' for Tokyo Games amid injury concerns, assures GAP chief
The Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) made the assurance that Carlos Yulo — one of the country's bets in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics — is perfectly fit and ready to compete in the Summer Games that formally opens on Friday, July 23.
Though GAP president Cynthia Carrion admitted that Yulo had hurt his hip during a training session two weeks ago, she said he is already fully recovered ahead of his competitions slated from July 24 to August 3.
"He has no injury now. I can say that Caloy is really 100 percent okay for the Olympics," Carrion told GMA News Online in a phone interview Thursday.
"He hurt his hip while doing a triple back routine in the floor exercise and it's not an easy routine. But he's not injured anymore. He's okay."
The 21-year-old gymnast will compete in seven events in artistic gymnastics that includes men's all-around, floor, horizontal bar, parallel bar, pommel horse, rings, and vault.
The qualifiers for all seven events take place on July 24, Saturday.
Yulo is among the 19 athletes seeing action in this year's Tokyo Olympics and stands to be the top bet for a gold finish, most especially in the floor exercise.
"He's fine and there's nothing to worry about," Carrion stressed.
