Hidilyn Diaz flies back to the Philippines on Wednesday
The Philippines will welcome its very first Olympic gold medalist in Hidilyn Diaz on Wednesday.
The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) announced that Diaz is set to arrive on board a Philippine Airlines flight.
"It's mandatory," said Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino in a statement, referring to protocols set by the Tokyo Olympics Organizing Committee.
"But more important is that Hidilyn wants to be with her family who she hasn't seen for more than one and a half years now," he added.
Diaz topped the women's 55kg division at the Tokyo Olympics after lifting a record-setting 127 kg in her last attempt at clean and jerk for the gold medal.
Her performance ended the country's 97-year wait for the elusive gold mint.
However, the POC said there would not be a usual grand home welcoming rites as health and safety protocols are in place.
Diaz and her team—Chinese coach Gao Kaiwen and strength and conditioning coach Julius Naranjo—will have to be quarantined for seven days as set by the Inter-Agency Task Force on the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases.
Athletes, coaches, officials, and even members of the media are required to leave Japan within 48 hours after the completion of their events or tasks as prescribed by the Tokyo Olympics Playbook.
