The Philippines will bring home multiple medals from Olympics for the first time since 1932
The Philippines is set to bring home more than one medal from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics — a feat accomplished for the first time since 1932.
In the 1932 edition of the quadrennial meet in the United States, three Filipinos landed on the podium for a medal.
Swimmer Teofilo Yldefonso snared a bronze medal in the 200m breaststroke event at the 1932 Games but prior to it, the tanker billed as the 'Ilocano Shark', also won bronze in the 1928 Games.
Athletics champion Simeon Toribio, meanwhile, was able to join the 1928, 1932, and 1936 editions of the quadrennial meet but his first and only medal came in at his second stint in 1932.
The last to bag a medal in that year was boxer Jose Villanueva. The Filipino fighter captured a bronze medal in the bantamweight after winning his bout against home bet Joseph Lang.
89 years later, the Philippines is tipped to take home multiple medals from the Olympics anew, this time in Tokyo.
Hidilyn Diaz wrote history as the first Filipino to deliver the country's first-ever gold after winning in the women's 55-kg division of weightlifting.
The Filipina weightlifter quenched a 97-year gold medal drought for the country since joining the Games in 1924.
Nesthy Petecio then scored a unanimous decision victory over Yeni Marcela Arias Castaneda of Colombia earlier today to enter the semifinal round of the women's featherweight tournament and secure at least a bronze medal finish.
Petecio is now set to become the first Filipino boxer to win a medal since Mansueto 'Onyok' Velasco won a silver in the 1996 Atlanta Games.
More medals could still possibly go the Philippines' way with 10 athletes set to action in the following days.
