Cris Nievarez finishes 23rd overall in Olympic rowing

Filipino rower Cris Nievarez finished in fifth place in the Finals D of the men's single sculls event in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics on Friday to wrap up his campaign in 23rd place overall in the classification phase.

He clocked in with a time of 7:21.28, almost 18 seconds behind Kazakhstan's Vladislav Yakovlev, who finished the Finals D in front for 19th place.

His time only a little over two seconds behind Iraq's Mohammed Al Khafaji in fourth place and over 30 seconds ahead of Saudi Arabia's Husein Alireza in sixth.

Nievarez reached the quarterfinal round of the event after finishing third in his preliminary heat last week. It stands as the best finish of any Filipino rower in the Olympic Games.

He then finished fifth out of six competitors in the quarters to bow out of medal contention and fifth again in the classification semifinals to enter the Finals D heat, which would determine places 19th to 24th.
