Luke Gebbie falls short of semis slot in men's 50m freestyle in Olympic swimming

Filipino swimmer Luke Gebbie finished first in Heat 5 in the men's 50m freestyle event of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics but fell short of qualification to the semifinals after the event's heats on Friday.

Only the Top 16 times after all of the heats would advance to the semifinals.

Gebbie finished first in his heat with a time of 22.84 seconds. However, this was 1.52 seconds behind Caeleb Dressel of the US, who topped the competition with 21.32 seconds.

Gebbie settled for the 41st place of 73 competitors.

On Tuesday, Gebbie broke the national record, a mark he already held, in the 100m. He clocked in at 49.64 seconds but was also unable to advance to the semis in the event.
