EJ Obiena advances to finals of Olympic men's pole vault event

EJ Obiena is through to the finals of the men's pole vault event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The 25-year-old athlete successfully cleared 5.75m in the qualification round on Saturday morning at the Olympic Stadium, to ensure a finish within the Top 12 of the field.

Participants have to clear the qualification mark of 5.80 meters or stay within the top 12 to advance to the championship round slated for August 3, Tuesday, at 6:20 p.m.

Obiena was impressive from the get-go after clearing 5.50 and and 5.65 meter marks all in his first attempt. He, however, failed on his first and second attempts at 5.75m.

He then made a successful leap in his final attempt at 5.75 to continue his bid for a finals seat.

Obiena, currently no. 6 in the world, was able to join seven tournaments this year alone, four of which he bagged the gold while settling for silvers in two.
