Powerlifter Achele Guion will miss Tokyo Paralympics due to COVID-19

Filipina powerlifter Achele Guion is set to miss the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics after she tested positive for COVID-19.

In a statement, Philippine Paralympic Committee (PPC) president Michael Barredo said that Guion, along with her coach Antonio "Tony" Taguibao, were unable to join the delegation.

They are both asymptomatic and now in good condition but Guion will still not be able to compete as per the Paralympic playbook.

"Jinky is deeply frustrated that she will not be able to compete in her powerlifting event for her country after training for so long, and especially getting much inspiration from Hidilyn Diaz," said Barredo.

Guion was supposed to compete in the women's -45kg. Without her, the Philippines will now be represented by five Filipinos in the Paralympics.

Wheelchair racer Jerrold Mangliwan (para athletics) is set to compete in three events namely men's 400m, 100m, and 1500m.

Swimmer Ernie Gawilan is scheduled to compete in men's 200m individual medley (IM), 400m freestyle, and 100m backstroke.

Another swimmer in Gary Bejino is tipped to join four events including the men's 200m IM, 50m butterfly, 400m freestyle, and 100m backstroke.

Jeanette Aceveda will play in the women's discus throw event while taekwondo jin Allain Ganapin will take part in the men's K44-75kg division.

The PPC initially reported last August 22 that some members of the Philippine Paralympic team contracted the virus. Those include some officials, coaches, and an athlete.

Other members of the delegation who tested positive for COVID-19 are chef de mission Francis Diaz and para athletics coach Joel Deriada.

"Despite this most unfortunate development, all our para athletes remain in high spirits and committed to give their best possible performances to bring honor and glory for our country," said Barredo.
