Filipino Ernie Gawilan finishes 6th in Paralympics freestyle swimming finals


Ernie Gawilan fell short in his attempt for a medal in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics men's freestyle 400-meter - S7 finals on Sunday.

Gawilan finished 6th among eight finalists with a time of 4:56.24. This is 25.18 seconds behind Israel's Mark Malyar who bagged the gold from the tournament.

Malyar also set a new world record after clocking in 4:31.06.

Ukraine's Andrii Trusov finished second with 4:35.56, while American Evan Austin settled for bronze with 4:38.95.

Gawilan will still compete in the men's backstroke event scheduled on Monday.

The Filipino para swimmer on Friday missed the finals bus for the men's 200-meter individual medley - SM7 event.

Later today, wheelchair racer Jerrold Mangliwan will vie for a medal in the men's 1500-meter T52 finals.
