Alex Eala, Belgian partner cruise to US Open juniors doubles QF


Alex Eala scooped twin quarterfinals berths on Thursday as she cruised to the Round of 8 of both the singles and doubles tournaments of the 2021 US Open girls.

The Filipina teen sensation and Hanne Vandewinkel of Belgium gutted out a 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 victory over Slovakia's Radka Zelnickova and Greece's Michaela Laki in their Round of 16 meeting at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City.

The match lasted for one hour and 8 minutes with Eala and Vandewinkel committing only four double faults and 11 unforced errors.

The Filipina-Belgian tandem advanced to the quarterfinals round where they will face hometown bets Madison Sieg and Elizabeth Coleman of the United States. Their clash is set for Friday at 3 a.m. (Manila time).

Earlier, Eala mounted a huge comeback to edge out Laki in the singles tilt to move on to the quarterfinals as well, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Before her doubles campaign tomorrow, Eala will first face Sebastianna Scilipoti of Switzerland at 1 a.m. in her bid to score her third Grand Slam title.
