Former Philippine sports official Moying Martelino passes away at 86

Philippine sports pillar Mauricio "Moying" Martelino passed away on Wednesday. He was 86.

The news was confirmed by the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) on its website.

"Sports Vision Management Group Incorporated (SVMGI) chairman Mauricio 'Moying' Martelino (March 21, 1935-September 22, 2021) passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning," the PVL said.

Martelino was one of the founders of SVMGI, the group behind PVL and Spikers' Turf.

Aside from volleyball, Martelino was also involved in other sports groups.

He was a former secretary general of Philippine Bowling and the Basketball Association of the Philippines, the predecessor of Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.

Martelino was also the secretary general of the Asian Basketball Confederation back in the 1990s. He was recognized by FIBA and was given the Order of Merit for his work in basketball.

"The Philippine basketball community has lost a true pioneer but his imprint in our sport is indelible. His invaluable insights and wisdom will be missed," the SBP said in a statement.

Rest in peace, Mr. Martelino.
