Carlos Yulo returned to the top of his game in his first taste of action ever since his maiden Olympic appearance in Tokyo last July.

The 21-year-old Filipino gymnast bagged the gold medal in the men's floor exercise in the 2021 All-Japan Senior & Masters Gymnastics Championship in Yamagata on Thursday.

He also won the bronze medal in vault, the only apparatus in the Olympics where he qualified for the final.

In a Facebook post, Yulo's longtime Japanese coach Munehiro Kugemiya said the 2019 floor exercise world champion scored 15.30 in his pet event and 15.00 in the vault.

Yulo had a tough showing during the Tokyo Summer Games when he failed to advance in the floor exercise and four other events.

He fell short of a podium finish in the vault after scoring 14.716 points, just 0.017 behind bronze medalist Artur Davytan of Armenia.
