Letran sweeps rival San Beda in MLBB Varsity Cup opener; Benilde, Lyceum, EAC score wins
Eight National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball teams renewed their rivalries in a different setup as they battled anew in Day 1 of the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Varsity Cup on Wednesday.
Colegio de San Juan de Letran got the better of its storied archrival San Beda University after the Fran Yu-led team walked away with a 2-0 victory.
Yu was joined by teammates Jeo Ambohot, Allen Mina, King Caralipio, Shan Bautista, and Jap Pambid while the San Beda unit was composed of Damie Cuntapay, Yukien Andrada , Justine Sanchez, Tony Ynot, and Gabriel Cometa.
In the opening salvo, College of Saint Benilde defeated the Arellano University, 2-1, before the Lyceum of the Philippines University eked out a 2-1 decision over the San Sebastian College-Recoletos.
Emilio Aguinaldo College then closed out the tournament opener with a 2-1 win over Mapua University.
The 10 participating schools will play in a single round robin qualifiers format with each game played in a best-of-three affair until November 13.
The top eight schools after the qualifiers will advance to the playoff round where the top four are seeded to the upper bracket while the bottom four will battle it out in the lower bracket.
The semifinal round is tipped to be in a best-of-five format while the championship match will played in a best-of-seven series.
