EJ Obiena gears up for Germany tilt after successful knee surgery

Pole vaulter EJ Obiena successfully underwent knee surgery on Tuesday to repair a small meniscus tear on his left knee days before his plan to return to action later this month.

In an Instagram post Wednesday, the world no. 6 happily shared the outcome of his minor surgery in Germany and stressed that he is now getting ready to get in the thick of his preparations for the Init Indoor Meeting in Karlsruhe, Germany on January 28.

"Surgery was successful. They have cleaned the meniscus and have removed the screw on my knee from the ACL reconstruction back in 2017 as the bone graft has fully solidified," Obiena said in his post.

"It shouldn’t affect my recovery and we're still on and aiming for 28th of January competition."

Obiena also expressed gratitude to Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) after the agency approved the budget for his medical expenses.

"Thank you very much for everyone who helped and supported me to make this surgery possible as early as yesterday. I am also thankful for Chairman Butch Ramirez announcing yesterday that funds for my surgery is available," Obiena added.

"I may be able to use this money once available to me to reimburse the advances of good samaritans."

Following his surgery, Obiena said he is gearing up to represent the country again in major international events. The 26-year-old athlete is expected to compete in five tournaments this year including Vietnam Southeast Asian Games and Asian Games.
