Cris Nievarez, Philippine rowers bag six silvers, two bronzes in virtual Asian Rowing championships


The Philippine Rowing Association bagged a total of eight medals in the 2022 Asian Rowing Virtual Indoor Championships held on Saturday.

Filipino Olympian Cris Nievarez clocked in 6:25.9 minutes to finish with a silver medal in the U23 men 2000 meter event behind Hong Kong's Wong Ho Yin who registered 6:19.6. Meanwhile, his compatriot Wong Wai Chun settled for third with 6:28.3.

Kristine Paraon brought home two silvers after competing in the U23 Women 2000m and 500m. Joachim De Jesus (U23 Lightweight Men 500m), Zuriel Sumintac (Lightweight Men 500M), and Alyssa Go (U23 Lightweight Women 500M) also added silver medals to the Philippine team's medal haul to bring the total to six.

Christian Joseph Jasmin and Kharl Julianne Sha captured bronze medals for the U23 Lightweight Men 2000m and U23 Lightweight Women 500m, respectively.

A total of 19 participants from the Philippines joined the tournament. Aside from members of the national team, Ateneo Rowing Team members such as De Jesus and Go were also in the competition.

The tournament was hosted by the Hong Kong China Rowing Association.
