Philippine Kurash team bags six medals; beach handball claims silver


The Philippines' kurash and beach handball teams on Wednesday bagged medals in the 31st Southeast Asian Games.

The kurash team added six medals to the country's medal haul. Sydney Sy (women's 87 kg+), Charmea Quelino (women's 52 kg), and Helen Aclopen (women's 48 kg) won silver medals while Al Llamas (men's -60 kg), Renzo Cazeñas (men's 81 kg), and George Baclagan (men's 90 kg) claimed bronze medals.

The beach handball team, meanwhile, claimed the country's first silver medal in the biennial meet.

On Wednesday, Francine Piados of pencak silat also won the gold medal, while her teammates Jefferson Loon, James Mayagma, and Rick Ortega settled for a team bronze medal.

Olympian Cris Nievarez, together with CJ Jasmin, also won silver in the rowing lightweight men's double sculls, while the women's Rowing Team of Joanie Delgaco, Amelyn Pagulayan, Josephine Qua, and Kristine Paraon finished with bronze in the women's quadruple sculls event.

Ahead of the opening ceremony, the Philippines already has 11 medals (one gold, five silvers, and five bronzes) in the Hanoi Games.
