EJ Obiena captures silver in ISTAF Berlin

Filipino Olympian and pole vaulter EJ Obiena scored another podium finish in the indoor pole vault season as he captured a silver in the 2023 ISTAF Indoor Berlin meet on early Saturday (Manila time) in Germany.

Obiena cleared 5.82 meters to place second behind Olympic gold medalist Armand Duplantis who cleared 6.06 meters. The Filipino Olympian attempted to clear 5.91 meters but was unsuccessful.

Kurtis Marschall of Australia also cleared 5.82 meters but placed third due to countback.

Obiena's latest achievement came at the heels of his announcement that he will skip the Asian Indoor Athletics Championship in Kazakhstan due to logistics and financial constraints. The Asian record holder, however, said on Friday that he will not accept offers of donations for his team as he awaits for the issues to be resolved through appropriate channels.

This is Obiena's seventh podium finish in the indoor season.
