Hidilyn Diaz, Elreen Ando miss podium in World Championships


Filipino Olympians and weightlifters Hidilyn Diaz and Elreen Ando missed the podium in the 59-kg event of the 2023 IWF World Championships on Friday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Diaz, who won the Philippines' first Olympic gold medal in the 55-kg event, had a total lift of 224 kg, with 97 kg in snatch and 127 kg in clean and jerk to finish seventh overall in her first 59-kg event.

Ando, who also competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, placed eighth with 222 kg from 100 kg in snatch and 122 kg in clean and jerk.

China's Luo Shifang had a total lift of 243 kg to place first, while her compatriot Pei Xinyi placed third with 232 kg. Ukraine's Kamila Konotop finished second with 236 kg.

Weightlifters can book tickets to the 2024 Paris Olympics through the Olympic Qualification Ranking which will be based on the total results the athletes can lift in select competitions, which include the World Championships.

The Olympic qualification window for weightlifting will run until April 28, 2024.
