Marcos congratulates Alex Eala for historic first WTA 125 title

Philippine President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. congratulated tennis ace Alex Eala for her first WTA 125 title.

In a social media post on Sunday, Marcos said Eala's victory is a win for all Filipinos.

“History has been written by Alex Eala as she becomes the first Filipino to win a WTA singles title,” Marcos said in a social media post Sunday.

“Congratulations Alex Eala! Ang iyong tagumpay ay tagumpay ng buong bansa. Gagawin natin ang lahat upang mas marami pang atletang Pilipino ang susunod sa yapak na ito at maipakita sa mundo ang galing at puso ng Pilipino.”

Eala won against Panna Udvardy of Hungary, 1–6, 7–5, 6–3, in the finals to become the first Filipino to win a WTA trophy.

The WTA 125 circuit, including the Guadalajara 125 Open, "offers both established WTA players and talented newcomers the ability to build their careers and progress up to the highest levels of the WTA Tour," according to the WTA website.

The higher levels of the WTA Tour are the WTA 250, WTA 500, and WTA 1000, with the numbers denoting the ranking points to be awarded to the winners of each tournament. Grand Slams, such as the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open, award 2000 ranking points.
