EJ Obiena hopes World Pole Vault Challenge is a ‘breath of fresh air’ amid PH situation

Filipino Olympian and pole vaulter EJ Obiena hopes the Atletang Ayala World Pole Vault Challenge held on Sunday served as a breath of fresh air amid the current situation in the country.

The pole vault meet took place on the same day as anti-corruption rallies in parts of the country were held, amid reports of alleged corruption in government infrastructure projects, especially those intended for flood control.

Obiena acknowledged being aware of the country's current state.

“I hope that they enjoyed it. I hope it gave them a bit of a smile,” Obiena said about the meet.

“I know the situation the country is in, and I know what's going on around town. This is something I hope can be a breath of fresh air, something to celebrate and a chance to show what Filipinos are capable of, what we can do.”

Obiena added that the event, which he spearheaded, also demonstrated the ability of Filipinos to organize world-class competitions.

“I'm really happy because it shows the ability of Filipinos to do something world-class by thinking, planning, and executing at the highest level. Like I said, this is nothing short of what we see in the Olympics. In Europe, it's at par, if not even better. I would say this is better than some of the meets I’ve competed in.”

Obiena topped the pole vault meet after clearing 5.80 meters, defeating eight other elite global vaulters.
