Who is Tereza Valentova? Alex Eala’s first opponent in the Japan Women’s Open

Alexandra “Alex” Eala will begin her Japan Women’s Open campaign on Tuesday afternoon against Tereza Valentova of Czechia.

Valentova earned her spot in the tournament’s main draw through the qualifiers, defeating Alina Charaeva and Eala’s former opponent Greet Minnen.

The 18-year-old Czech currently holds a WTA ranking of No. 78, just slightly below her career-high of No. 75, which she reached three weeks ago.

Like Eala, Valentová also made her Grand Slam main draw debuts at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, reaching the Round of 64 in both tournaments.

Eala, meanwhile, is returning from a brief break after missing the main draw of the Wuhan Open.

Before Wuhan, she reached the quarterfinals of the Suzhou WTA 125, the semifinals of the Jingshan Tennis Open, and the quarterfinals of the SP Open. She also won her first WTA 125 title last month in Guadalajara, Mexico.
