Carlos Yulo a proud brother as Karl Eldrew shines in Junior Gymnastics World Championships

Filipino Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo was one happy brother as he cheered for his younger sibling, Karl Eldrew, during the 3rd Artistic Gymnastics Junior World Championships on Thursday at the Marriott Manila in Pasay City.

Karl Eldrew qualified for four finals events: the individual all-around, floor exercise, vault, and horizontal (high) bar.

“Super nakaka-proud, especially sa high bar, floor din, ang ganda ng pinakita niya. Super nakaka-proud kasi nakita ko ang practice niya, talagang pinaghirapan niya ‘yun and makapasok sa ganoong finals,” Carlos said.

“Sobrang laking bagay po noon para sa kanya na ma-experience ‘yun.”

Although they share the same bloodline and coach, both being trained by Japanese coach Munehiro Kugimiya, Carlos said Karl Eldrew’s style is totally different from his.

“Totally different movement and different style talaga. Happy talaga ako dahil siya po ‘yung next generation, and hopefully next year po, I’m really excited na makasama siya sa mga competition,” he said.

Karl Eldrew, meanwhile, said he will focus on his gymnastics career after completing his senior high school studies at Adamson University.

“Ito po ang pinakaimportante dahil ang dami ko pong sacrifices these past few years. I also plan to stop after my senior high school to focus on my gymnastics and learn Nihongo so I can speak with them properly. I have to focus on myself and my career first kaya iniingatan ko rin po ang sarili ko as much as possible,” Karl Eldrew said.

The individual all-around finals will be held on Saturday, while the floor exercise final is scheduled for Sunday. The vault and horizontal bar finals will take place on Monday.
