Karl Eldrew Yulo overcomes ankle injury to claim Junior Worlds floor exercise bronze
Karl Eldrew Yulo was hurting as he stepped onto what was likely the biggest stage of his young career.
The 17-year old Karl Eldrew competed in the floor exercise finals of the Artistic Gymnastics Junior World Championships on Sunday at the Marriott Grand Ballroom where he claimed bronze.
The younger brother of Filipino Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo battled through an ankle injury he sustained during Saturday’s individual all-around finals, where he finished eighth.
What pushed him forward, however, was his persistence—especially as he carried the Philippine flag.
“Masakit pa rin po, but we still managed to compete with it, and we still managed to get bronze even though I injured myself yesterday. But it’s [a] Filipino [trait]—we will fight until the very end,” Karl Eldrew said on Sunday.
“Kanina pa lang po sa podium, nararamdaman ko pa rin po, pero tiniis ko na lang. Hindi ko na rin masyadong ininda,” the younger Yulo added, saying he chose instead to stay focused on the task at hand.
Yulo is still scheduled to compete in the vault and horizontal bar finals on Monday.
