Alex Eala, Iva Jovic advance to ASB Classic doubles semis via walkover


Tennis: Alex Eala and Iva Jovic

Filipina tennis ace Alex Eala and American partner Iva Jovic are through to the ASB Classic doubles semifinals via a walkover on Thursday in Auckland, New Zealand. 

The 20-year-old Eala and 18-year-old Jovic were scheduled to face Jesika Maleckova and Renata Zarazua in the quarterfinals, but the latter pair withdrew, handing the duo a straight path to the semifinals.

Up next for Eala and Jovic is the third-seeded pair from China in Yifan Xu and Zhaoxuan Yang in the semifinals scheduled on Saturday. Xu is currently ranked 40 by WTA while Yang is 44th. 

Eala, currently the no. the 53 player in WTA, is also flourishing in the singles after dominating Croatia's Petra Marcinko, 6-0, 6-2, in the Round of 16 earlier today to advance to the quarterfinals. 

Likewise, world no. 35 Jovic is also through to the singles quarterfinals after beating Sara Bejlek in the Round of 16, 7-6(3), 6-4.
