Para swimmers Angel Otom, Ariel Alegarbes strike gold in ASEAN Para Games

Para swimmers Angel Otom and Ariel Alegarbes added to the Philippines’ gold medal haul at the ASEAN Para Games on Thursday in Thailand.

Otom captured her second gold medal after ruling the women’s 100m freestyle S4–S5, clocking 1:41.44.

She won her first on Wednesday in the women's 50m backstroke S4-S5.

Alegarbes, meanwhile, clinched gold in the men’s 100m backstroke S14 with a time of 1:02.52.

With their victories, the para swimming team has now accounted for seven of the country’s 12 gold medals in the biennial meet.

Overall, the Philippines has also tallied 10 silver medals and eight bronze medals.

According to the Paralympics website, S1-S10 events are for swimmers with physical impairments, with classifications based on how the impairment affects swimming performance.
