Tatiana Prozorova stuns top-seeded Tatjana Maria in Philippine Women’s Open
World No. 174 Tatiana Prozorova pulled off a major upset, defeating top-seeded Tatjana Maria, 7-6(2), 6-4, in the Round of 16 of the Philippine Women’s Open on Wednesday at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.
Maria, ranked world No. 42, is the highest-ranked player in the tournament, followed by Alex Eala at No. 49.
"It's a tough fight as you saw in the score. Maria showed a very good game and it's a good batte," Prozorova said.
"Maybe today, it's just more pressure on her that's why I won. I'm very proud of myself for this win because I showed a very good game and footwork."
Prozorova will next face Belgium’s Sofia Costoulas in the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, Donna Vekic cruised past Mariia Tkacheva, 6-1, 6-2, while Lanlana Tararudee advanced to the final eight after beating Polina Kudermetova, 6-4, 6-4.
Camila Osorio also secured a quarterfinal spot, rallying past Mai Hontama, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Osorio will face the winner of the match between Alex Eala and Himeno Sakatsume.
