Alex Eala secures spot in Qatar Open main draw

Alexandra ‘Alex’ Eala is still in action at the Abu Dhabi Open, but her Middle East swing continues next week, as she has clinched a spot in the Qatar Open main draw.

The WTA announced on Wednesday that Eala is part of the 56-player singles draw, stepping in to replace Veronika Kudermetova, who withdrew due to injury.

The player list features Grand Slam champions Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina, and Coco Gauff, alongside top contenders Amanda Anisimova and Mirra Andreeva. Eala’s former opponents, including Victoria Mboko, Maya Joint, and Cristina Bucsa, are also in the draw.

The Qatar Open is a WTA 1000 event, offering 1,000 ranking points to the winner and a prize money of $665,000.

Following the Qatar Open, which runs from February 8 to 14, Eala is expected to continue her Middle East swing at the Dubai Championships, also a WTA 1000 event, where she is currently listed as a qualifier.

Eala has already made waves on the WTA Tour this year, reaching the semifinals at the ASB Classic before a first-round exit at the Australian Open.

She then returned to Manila for the Philippine Women’s Open, reaching the quarterfinals.

At the ongoing Abu Dhabi Open, Eala has advanced to the quarterfinals in both singles and doubles.
