Alex Eala, Janice Tjen advance to Abu Dhabi Open doubles semis

Alexandra “Alex” Eala and Indonesia’s Janice Tjen advanced to the semifinals of the Abu Dhabi Open doubles event after defeating Zhang Shuai of China and Cristina Bucsa of Spain, 6-3, 6-3, in the quarterfinals.

The victory came just hours after Eala bowed out of the singles competition with a quarterfinal loss to Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Eala and Tjen needed only one hour and six minutes to dispatch their opponents and book a spot in the next round.

In the first round, Eala and Tjen defeated the pair of Kristina Mladenovic and Leylah Fernandez, 7-5, 3-6, 10-6.

The Southeast Asian duo will face Tereza Mihalikova of Slovakia and Olivia Nicholls of Great Britain in the semifinals.
